Cessna Unveils Ageing Aircraft Programme

Cessna is launching one of the largest aging aircraft programs to be undertaken for a fleet of single piston engine aeroplanes. Maintenance manual supplements are being prepared to provide instruction for the inspection and rectification of corrosion and fatigue in its fleet of 100 and 200 series aircraft, manufactured from 1946 to 1986. Almost 145,000 Cessnas are affected. The manual supplements are expected to be completed by the end of April this year. Compliance deadlines will be December 2013 for 200series and June 2014 for 100 series.
Cessna advise the inspection programme they have developed is primarily a visual process aimed at supporting the continued airworthiness of aging airframes. Corrosion and fatigue are inevitable but with early detection and proper maintenance, severity and effects can be minimized.
The average age of the fleet in the affected group is 42 years old.
The inspections will vary depending on model, age and hours of operation and they have been designed to
coincide with an annual inspection. We understand some special non invasive equipment will be required,
such as a borescope. More invasive non destructive inspections will be required if corrosion or cracks are suspected.
